Al Hassakeh & Al Qamishli

The area hosts very important archaeological sites dated to different periods such as Tell Halaf, which is located near the Turkish border in northeastern Syria. Impressive monumental sculptures and architectural remains have been found there. The site was once known as Guzana, an important Aramaic kingdom in the first millennium BC.

Also several important bronze age sites are located in the area. To mention only the most important: Tell Mozan, Tell Leilan, Tell Beydar, Tell Arbeed, Tell Hamokar, Tell Berry and Tell Brak, the later being famous for its sculptures.

In the period before the conflict, this part of Syria was one of the major archaeological work fields in the country.
