Mortar shell hits the Tekkiye Mosque in Damascus

The Directorate-General of Antiquities & Museums reports that the city center of Damascus was hit by several mortar shells during the morning hours of Sunday, December 13th 2015. One hit the Tekkiye Mosque located next to the National Museum of Damascus. Early reports state that some damages occurred in the site and to visitors alike.

The Tekkiye mosque is a registered historical building, dating to the 16th century AD, and considered as one of the important historical monuments of the city of Damascus.

The Ancient City of Damascus is placed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
