Damascus Ayyubid citadel damaged by mortar shelling

According to Syrian official sources, the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM), a shelling mortar has affected the western wall facade of the tower in the eastern entrance of the castle which was allocated to receive visitors. The mortar shell caused a hole in the wall and was recorded on the 3rd of November. This represents a significant development in the threats that the Cultural heritage of Syria is facing in the current conflict since it’s the first time that the Damascus citadel is hit by shelling. The Citadel is a part of the Old City of Damascus inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1979.
